Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes

The Members of Laborers’ Local 332 supports good causes in our community! Today we joined the effort to help raise awareness to a silent killer in our community-Diabetes. The Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Thousands of people took part in a 3 mile walk down and back along the Schuylkill River to raise money and awareness of diabetes.
The Laborers’ District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia & Vicinity (LDC) was there with a very helpful information booth. Passing out t-shirts and goody bags with water, treats and most important-some very good information about Diabetes.

In one of the handouts provided by the LDC, members are reminded:
“Whatever your risk factors for diabetes may be, there’s a lot you can do to delay or prevent diabetes, you should:
-Manage your blood pressure
-Keep your weight within or near normal range
-Get moderate exercise on most days
-Eat a balanced diet

According to the American Diabetes Association, compared to the general population, “African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes”. As laborers our work demands an increased awareness of our health. So it is important that we stay aware and participate in efforts designed to improve the health of ourselves and our community.

The ‘Step Out-Walk’ was a wonderful event where members of our local hung out, laughed, and enjoyed a good time for a good cause. Please take a look at some of the pictures of our members below:
